My family ( they are middle class not rich )in PR state it is not that they do not want to be their own country or even be a state, but if mainland US withdrew their financial support, it would hurt the common man not the rich.Personally I wish PR would become its own country, and not depend so much on the US .Our language and culture are so different from the US, a real shame.

I have alot of family that lives in PR and I have talked about this issue with them. I am not a expert on this topic , but they have told me if PR became its own country or even a state it would be financial suicide for PR. Many people only see the tourist side and hotels , but the average PR is lower middle class to poor ( go to Ponce or Naranhito that is where my family hails from ), and could not afford to pay US taxes or taxes as a seperate country.

Puerto Ricans have had several reforendoms on independence. They like being US citizens, and they like their tax exempt status even more. Mainland Americans contribute millions to the Puerto Rican tourist economy.

Puerto Rico is a direct colony of McDonalds, most of other Latin American countries are semi-colonies, exept Cuba.
Venezuela is becoming independent but Chavez is too kind with the oposition.
